Young love..."Who can explain it? ...Who can tell you why?" (To borrow that great line by Oscar Hammerstein.) My darling young friend Scarlet was swept off her feet by her dashing Vandre and within months was planning her wedding. My shower gift to her was handmade thank you notes, on which I incorporated photos of her and her beloved taken at the wedding shower.
Truly a labor of love, each of the 22 cards was different and each had a little something on the inside and a stamped envelope. The idea was to make the tedious task of writing thank you notes more fun. Scarlet could match each card to the gift-giver and then choose an envelope to go with it.
I had some blank blue cards by Recollections, that I thought would make a good base, since the blue on Vandre's shirt was so prominent on the photos. The first step was editing, cropping and printing out the photos.
Next, I selected just the right shade of blue for each photo...
I have a great selection of papers in my stash, so I just started cutting and piecing and layering and adhering...allowing my creativity to flow organically. Here's an example of how I worked. I just got an idea, cut my papers, then held them up with the card and the photo. Amazingly, usually the initial selections of elements were right on, so I just went with them...essentially "feeling" my way through each card.
For example, I decided to mat this photo and to glue it down at an angle, trimming the access. But it needed a little something more...
Yes! That's it! It needs a banner!
Perfect! Now to put a little surprise inside...
Naturaly, continuing the banner-theme would work beautifully. If Scarlet wishes, she can add her own letters to the inside banner...such as "L-O-V-E" or "B-L-I-S-S". Or she can just leave it the way it is and just add her own message in the area provided. I LOVE the idea of interactive cards...I personalized each card for her and left her the opportunity to add her own touches.
In designing the cards, my only "rule" was that each card had to say "thank you" somewhere...inside or out, so I allowed myself a very wide range of creativity.
Then pull it all together! For this one, I decided to stamp on the "thank you" and to add a bit of gossamer ribbon.
Here are a few of the cards (all using my favorite photo of the couple), illustrating diversity of design...the possibilities are endless!
...And how I personalized some of the insides:
It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think my favorite is this mulberry paper one...
Something about the organic quality and the textures just really appeals to me. I used Washi tape to adhere the photo to the mulberry paper and tied it with natural rafia. (More about this in my next post.)
For the next several weeks, I will post different cards from this series...please let me know if there is one that stands out to you, or one that you favor above the others.
And by all means, try your own hand at a card or two...
As lovely as it is to receive a hand-written thank you note, it is even more special to receive a hand-made one.
In love and gratitude,
